VACHNADZE, NATO (1904-1953). One of the finest Georgian actresses, Vachnadze was born into a Georgian noble family of Andronikashvili in Warsaw (Poland) and began her acting in 1923, when the director of the newly established Goskinprom film studio noticed her photograph in Tbilisi. Her first two movies – Mamis mkvleli and Arsena qachaghi proved to be successful and launched her movie career. By the 1930s, she emerged as one of the brightest stars of the Soviet screen and among her various awards were the titles of People’s Artist of the Georgian SSR (1941) and Honorary Artist of the RSFSR, three Orders of the Red Banner of Labor and the Stalin Prize (1941). Her life tragically ended in a plane crush in June 1953.
